Following a period of records last year, VW Group started the current year with contrasting results: in January the group marketed 652,500 vehicles worldwide, only 1.3% more than the year before.

In their largest market, in China, VW’s sales decreased by 4.5%. The company only sold 208,200 cars, which is still a great achievement taking into account the 13% drop in Chinese vehicle registrations. Due to growing demands on luxury models, member of VW Group Audi managed to increase their sales in China by 22.6% to 22,600 cars in January.

In the US, in their second largest market, after a decay lasting for several years, VW registered 36,700 vehicles, posting a 39.5% growth in the country compared to the previous year. According to the company, this has been their best first month since 1979. The growth in America is a result of the success of the Jetta and Passat models, developed specially for the local market. The sales of the Volkswagen brand increased 47.9% to 27,200 vehicles, while Audi sold 9,400 cars, “only” 19.7% more than the previous year.

In the Pacific region including India, VW sold 9,400 cars, 28.4% more than in 2011.

In the European market sales decreased by 1% to 259,900. In Germany, the number of marketed vehicles also went down by 1% to 74,100 units, however, in Central and Eastern Europe, sales rose by 33.6% to 41,400 units.

VW’s Czech subsidiary, Skoda’s success remains unbroken. The brand sold 75,400 vehicles in January, 10.2% more than in the same period of the previous year. On the contrary, Seat, the Spanish subsidiary sold 21,700 cars, registering a 15.4% decrease.
