By 2018, Volkswagen AG plan to extend the number of sold vehicles to 10 million, with which the company would get ahead of General Motors and Toyota Motors Corp, growing into the largest automotive manufacturer in the world.
The increase of sales is a result of energetic activity in the emerging markets and the developed North American market.
Mr Winterkorn told the journalists at the Detroit Motor Show that they are still planning to merge with Porsche Automobile Holding. The two companies had wanted to settle the case by the end of 2011, however, the final decision had to be postponed as a result of several legal proceedings in the US and Germany.
