The asphalt of the Győr-Gönyű Harbour will be the meeting place of European vehicle engineers for the third time: between August 17 and 20, the venue will be the location of the 3rd Formula Student Hungary race. The 40 entry places were filled under just 52 seconds. This year for the first time electric cars can also compete with those with traditional internal combustion engines.

“By breaking last year’s record, 1 minute and 58 seconds, the 40 spots in the online registration list were filled in just 52 seconds,” informed Tamás Csütörtöki, Director of FSH. “More than one and a half times as many, 64 teams tried to squeeze into the 40 spots, and this well represents the Hungarian race’s prestige and popularity among university students. Teams will be able to compete with electric drive vehicles for the first time, 10 places were provided for them in total, the rest of the teams will race with traditional internal combustion engined vehicles. It will be a special experience for the spectators that the two types of vehicles will race in one category rather than competing separately.”

It is good news that each Hungarian team, Szeged University of Science, Kecskemét College and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, have managed to get into the field. The latter takes part with an electric car; the interesting thing with the Szeged team is that there is no vehicle engineer training at the institute.

Győr-based Széchenyi University has not built a complete race car, though the students will develop an engine tailored to FS requirements, which then they’ll offer to the more than 500 Formula Student teams around the world.

“Students will arrive from mostly Western European - German, Austrian, British and Italian - universities to the race in Győr-Gönyű, though we have teams registering from Russia and even India.

“The reputation of the Hungarian race also reached the US, we found the following message on the website of the Oregon Team: ‘It’s a shame that you are so far from here, we would gladly go, too.’ And that spirit is true to the students of many other American universities, too. Our popularity is shown by the fact that students from many European teams have volunteered to be assisters, who had already experienced the atmosphere of the Hungarian event,” said Tamás Csütörtöki.

“X-Meditor Kft, the company responsible for the organisation of the event, considers Formula Student competitions as a long-term project,” points out Imre Pintér-Péntek, CEO.

He added: “To prove that at the same time of the registration we announced an architectural competition for architect students studying at domestic universities. We asked them to design a Competition Building which suits the atmosphere of the car race, and a VIP Pavilion, which then will be set up every year to provide a suitable meeting point for the leaders of local automotive companies and students. To our greatest pleasure, Győr-based Unicentral Kft has undertaken the task of construction, and our architect friend, Csaba Rosta has offered a grand prize for the winner, who will be selected by a professional jury chaired by József Finta on March 3 in Győr."
