EU: 1 million cars registered in January

ACEA reports: the market of new vehicles in the EU weakened in January. Sales decreased in all the major markets, except for Spain. The number of registered cars reached 1 million, which is 6.6% less than in the same period in the previous year.

Registrations varied per market: France (-20.7%) and Italy (-16.9%) recorded a double-digit downturn, while Spain posted a 2.5% growth. The German (-0.4%) and British (-0.0%) markets remained stable. The biggest contraction was noted in Portugal (-47.4%) and the largest increase in Romania (+86.4%).

In Germany, Europe’s largest car market, sales went down by 0.4% to 210,195 in January, while in Great Britain, 128,853 cars were sold, the same amount as in the previous year. January registration numbers grew in Austria by 4.9% and in the Czech Republic by 10.9%.

On the list of brands VW Group is still leading the market with 23.9% market share, while PSA Peugeot Citroen is in second place with 12.5%. Renault Group and Ford share the third place with 8.3%, and GM (Opel, Vauxhall, Chevy) is fourth with 7.4%. Fiat Group’s share in the market is 7%, followed by BMW-Mini with 5.3%, Hyundai with 3.3%, Kia with 2.2%, Volvo with 1.9%, Suzuki with 1.3%, and Jaguar-Land Rover had 1% share in the European market in January. The list is closed by Honda, Mazda and Mitsubishi with 0.9 and 0.8% respectively.
