Hungarian automotive industry: week 27

While Europe is loud with the Greek referendum, Hungary was busy to supply us with automotive industry-related news. Let´s recap what happened in week 27 in Hungary´s auto sector.

It was announced last week that Jaguar Land Rover chose an Austrian location over Hungary for producing new Land Rover models. For months, Hungarian towns including Debrecen, Zalaegerszeg and Szombathely and the region of Győr had been considered candidates for the location of a JLR production plant.

Land Rover to produce new models in Austria

The British manufacturer, owned by Indian Tata Group announced last week that the company has signed an agreement with Austria-based Magna Steyr on the production of Jaguar cars in Graz.

Last week saw news of a potential Goodyear expansion in Hungary. According to a statement published last week, after closing its UK-based and one of its German plants, the American tyre manufacturer is looking to relocate production to existing manufacturing locations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Last week, Győr-based automotive parts manufacturer Rába announced a long-term, five-year agreement with a European premium manufacturer.

According to the company's press release, Rába have been in a partnership with the unspecified commercial vehicle manufacturer for several years. Rába Járműipari Holding Nyrt. first started supplying components for the premium commercial vehicle manufacturer back in 2007, according to the company.

Rosenberger Hungary announced last week to build a new, 5,000-square-metre production hall and install state-of-the-art equipment with a major investment.

The Hungarian subsidiary of the German supplier of data cables and connectors said last Monday that the company is expanding production capacity with a nearly HUF 3.5 billion investment. The development project will create 250 new jobs at the Jászárokszállás plant.

Veszprém-based Valeo also made a similar announcement last week. The company is creating 25 new jobs with a HUF 2.5 billion investment, subsidized by a HUF 625 million EU aid.

The nine new production line will manufacture electronic controllers, stalker switches, advanced starter keys and charging systems for hybrid vehicles. The investment will increase the company's headcount to over 1,500.

Audi Hungaria announced last week that the number of interns at the company's training centre has reached a record number of 500. In addition, 105 trainees graduated from the company and began their careers at the car maker on June 30.

The best-performing interns received an honour from the company.

Brake and safety systems manufacturer Knorr-Bremse announced in a statement last week that in the future the company is looking to focus on core activities with the largest growth potential, such as R&D, project management, sales and group administration. As a result, Hungary will play an ever more significant role in the group's life.

Although production is yet to start, training is already under way at Apollo Tyres' Gyöngyöshalász plant. The tyre manufacturer has launched the training of its 70 freshly graduated technicians, who had previously signed a scholarship agreement with the company.

Theoretical training will begin in early-July, to be followed by a 10-week internship at Apollo Tyres' Indian and Dutch locations.

General Electric are also looking to concentrate on trainings. Under the framework of GE's regional scholarship programme, first launched in Hungary 13 years ago, five Hungarian university students have been awarded with the opportunity to become acquainted with the company's regional operation in a two-year training.
