The performance of the automotive industry grew by 17 percent in the first nine months this year, while its production value reached HUF 6,000 billion, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said on Friday at the ground-breaking ceremony of the bumper plant built by India-based Samvardhana Motherson Group (SMG) in Kecskemét.

The ceremony was also attended by Vivek Chaand Sehgallal, president of the Samvardhana Motherson Group.

Szijjártó said the 96,000 m2 bumper manufacturing unit, built with HUF 31 billion investment in Kecskemét, will create 450 new jobs in the town.

He added that the project is also supported by a HUF 7.7 billion state subsidy and has been promoted as an investment of national economic interest.

The minister reminded that just one month ago, the Hungarian government and SMG had signed a strategic partnership agreement.

Vivek Chaand Sehgal, president of SMG, said at the ceremony that one of the main reasons for choosing the Hungarian location was the support of the government and the town of Kecskemét.

The new unit, to be handed over by 2017, will produce bumpers for a certain model manufactured at the Kecskemét Mercedes plant from 2018. Plans include a production capacity of 5,500 bumper units per day.

The production unit will be built right next to the German car maker's Hungarian plant in Kecskemét.

With 70,000 employees at 170 locations in 25 countries in five continents, SMG is one of the world's 50 largest automotive suppliers.

In the previous financial year, SMR Hungary Bt., employer of 1,600 people at the company's two plants in Mosonszolnok and Mosonmagyaróvár and a logistics centre in Hegyeshalom, booked €306 million in net revenues.

Today, SMR Hungary is one of the world's largest rear-view mirror plants, supplying the world's largest car manufacturers with nearly 7 million pairs of external mirrors every year. The company's main partners include OEMs such as VW, Audi, Porsche, BMW, Daimler, General Motors, Kia/Hyundai and Fiat/Chrysler.
