FSH 2014: engineering students compete for the 5th time in Hungary

Last weekend, the fifth Formula Student Hungary event was held at Győr-Gönyű Harbour. The four-day competition saw over 1,000 engineering students from 44 universities from 14 countries, including Hungary, Germany, Czech Republic, Russia, Ukraine, Greece and Great Britain.

FSH 2014 was organized by Győr-based XMEDITOR Kft. and sponsored by important automotive manufacturers and suppliers such as Audi Hungaria, Continental, SMR Hungary and NI Hungary.

Teams from Hungary also participated, there were familiar names such as the BME Formula Racing Team from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics and KEFO Motorsport from Kecskemét College, but there were also teams who made their debut at FSH 2014, such as Arrabona Racing Team from Széchenyi István University, who later managed to finish as the best Hungarian team.

SZEngine, the other team from Győr-based Széchenyi University took part as exhibitors showing their own engine developed for Formula Student racing cars, and University of Miskolc arrived with a VW beetle converted to full-electric drive developed by one the University's PhD students, which was also exhibited at the event area.

At the official press conference held on Saturday, State Secretary for Higher Education László Palkovics said that from the aspect of Hungary’s economy the Formula Student race is more important than the Hungarian Grand Prix, as this event lines up the future of Hungary’s research and development and is an important part of the dual education system, which the government is working hard on to better and better implement into Hungary’s higher education.

The press conference was also attended by Zsolt Borkai, Mayor of Győr, Péter Földesi, the Rector of Széchenyi István University, Ákos Kriza, Mayor of Miskolc, Péter Lőre, main sponsor Audi Hungaria’s communicational director, Róbert Keszte, the CEO of Continental Hungary, Gergely Obra-Szabó, plant director of SMR Hungary, and László Ábrahám, the CEO of NI Hungary, who all emphasised the importance of collaboration between universities, the industry and local governments.

Péter Földesi, Rector of Széchenyi István University, said the Formula Student series completes the dual education system with a third platform, which in addition to theoretical studies and practice-oriented training, provides the students with a place for competition.

Mayor of Győr Zsolt Borkai said that the excellent cooperation between the town and Audi has made Győr one of the automotive centres of Hungary, while Mayor of Miskolc Ákos Kriza said Miskolc would like to learn from Győr in order to establish a good communication between the town, the university and the local players of the industry.

Audi communicational director Péter Lőre said that besides being the main sponsor for the event, Audi also supports the teams, including three of the four Hungarian teams participating in FSH 2014.

It was also said at the press conference that Continental and NI Hungary also sponsors several teams with their automotive products, such as sensors, tyres and software.

Tamás Csütörtöki, sales director for XMEDITOR Kft., said at the press conference that the 2014 event focused on Central Eastern Europe, which is why 50 percent of the teams that registered arrived from this region.
