The investment, announced on Friday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, will render the Sopronkövesd-based factory the largest seat belt manufacturing plant in Europe.

The company is planning to add a new 15,000-square metre complex next to the existing 19,000-square metre production hall. The HUF 11 billion (36 million EUR) investment is supported by a HUF 1.5 billion (EUR 5 million) government aid.

In addition to the expansion, the company undertook to increase the share of Hungarian firms from 5 to 20 percent in the supply of raw materials and from 30 to 50 percent in the supply of machines, said Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó.

Frank Kohrs, the European vice-president of Autoliv responsible for the production of seat belts thanked the municipality of Sopronkövesd and the Hungarian government for their support in the project. The Sweden-based company has been present in Hungary since 1993. Autoliv employs 1,760 people in the country. The Sopronkövesd-based plant is a supplier of major OEMs such as Audi, BMW, Daimler, Volvo and Volkswagen.
